The launch of the ROHU Project 285 “Healthy Traditions-Science for the Next Generation”
The West University of Timisoara hosted on February 14, 2019, the conference that marked the opening of the Healthy Traditions – Science for the Next Generation (eMS ROHU 285) project, funded by the European Union under the Interreg V-A Romania-Hungary Program. The project is implemented by the Association “Iris Research” in Arad, as a beneficiary of the West University of Timisoara (UVT) and the “Nicolae Balcescu” Lyceum in Gyula (LNB), as partners. Specifically, the project involves the identification of 15 localities in the counties of Arad, Timiş and Bekes (Hungary), which will be observed and studied from the perspective of their traditions, focusing on identifying common elements.
Together with the representatives of the three partner institutions in the project, Victor Alexeev, Secretary of State at the Ministry for Romanians Abroad, and Florin Vasiloni, General Consul of Romania at Gyula, attended the event. The event was attended by Otilia Hedesan, vice-rector of UVT, LNB director Maria Gurzău Csegledi, LNB director, Claudia Toma, president of Iris Research, Delia Kovacs, editor-in-chief of Chronicle, Olimpia Oprea, manager of Timişoara Municipal Hospital. In his speech, Victor Alexeev pointed out that “this project is directly related to our traditions, and it is worthwhile opening up to other historical communities.” In many communities, tradition is often better preserved than inside country “. In turn, Florin Vasiloni highlighted that it is very important that, besides infrastructure purposes, bridges must be built between people. Knowing local traditions can have a beneficial effect on building a better future.
At the end of the conference, the guests had the opportunity to visit the photographic exhibition“We succeeded, we pingled, snapped”, made by the Masters of the West University of Timisoara, at the end of the researches conducted at the Romanian communities in Hungary, Bucovina and Transcarpatia between 2006-2008, within a project funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania through the Department for Romanians Abroad.
The representatives of the three partner institutions have main activities of the project, among which we mention the involvement of a group of 45 volunteers who will conduct field research in the Romanian-Hungarian border region (Timis and Arad), respectively in the Romanian community in Hungary (Bekes) the study of the same traditions and their evolution over three generations; organizing a scientific ethno-pharmacy conference in Arad, and two thematic and educational workshops: To cook together with our ancestors (at Jula) Let’s talk with our forerunners (in Timisoara). At the end of the field identification and processing of these data, the project team will produce several products: a synthetic volume on gastronomic practices in the studied area, including examples, a calendar of traditional events in the region, dedicated to local communities and a volume comprising texts with a scientific approach, approaching the working methods used
